Symptoms of Fungal Exposure

The following is an excerpt of an article written by Susan Lillard-Roberts who heads up the mold-help website.

Fungi, which include yeasts, moulds, smuts and mushrooms, are responsible for causing four types of mycotic (fungal) disease:

1. Hypersensitivity - an allergic reaction to moulds and spores
2. Mycotoxicosis - poisoning by food products contaminated by fungi
3. Mycetismus - the ingestion of preformed toxin (toadstool poisoning)
4. Infection (systemic) - (Mycotoxicosis; the subject below)

These are the most common symptoms of fungal exposure (bear in mind, people never fit all of below criteria). Most people with some forms of Mycotoxicosis meet at least 8 (recent symptoms) of the following criteria:

Fibromyalgia/mps (and several correlated symptoms)
Respiratory distress, coughing, sneezing,
sinusitis
Difficulty swallowing, choking, spitting up (vomiting) mucous
Hypersensitivity pneumonitis
Burning in the throat and lungs (similar to acid reflux and often misdiagnosed as such)
Asthmatic signs; wheezing, shortness in breath, coughing, burning in lungs, etc.
Irritable bowel syndrome, nausea, diarrhea, sharp abdominal pains, stomach lesions
Bladder,
liver, spleen, or kidney pain
Dark or painful urine
Dirt-like taste in mouth, coated tongue
Food allergies/leaky gut syndrome/altered immunity
Memory loss; brain fog, slurred speech, occasionally leading to dementia
Vision problems
Swollen lymph nodes
Large boils on neck (often a sign of
anaphylaxis)
Yellowing of nails, ridges, or white marks under nail
Thyroid irregularities, sometimes leading to complete dysfunction; adrenal problems
Headaches
Anxiety/depression, heart palpitations - confusion,
PTSD
Extreme blood pressure, cholesterol, or triglycerides irregularities
Ringing in ears, balance problems (very common), dizziness, loss of hearing (aspergillus niger)
Chronic fatigue (also included under this classification directional confusion)
Intermittent face flushing; almost always systemic, Called the Mylar Flush (neurological))
Night head sweats, and drooling while sleeping, profuse sweating
Multiple chemical sensitivity; only upon exposure to Stachybotrys and Chaetomium
Nose bleeds (stachybotrys)
Bruising/scarring easily;
rash or hives, bloody lesions all over the skin (Often systemic, see images; skin)
Reproductive system complications;
infertility, changes in menstrual cycles, miscarriage
Sudden weight changes (Detoxifier genotypes tend to gain weight, non-detoxifier genotypes tend to lose weight)
Cancer
Hair loss, very brittle nails, temporary loss of fingerprints (in rare cases)
Joint/muscle stiffness and pain
Irregular heart beat/heart attack
Seizures, inadvertent body jerking, twitching, inadvertent facial movements or numbness in face
Hypersensitivity when re-exposed to molds, which can lead to anaphylaxisAnaphylaxis upon re-exposure to mycotoxin producing molds
Death, in extreme cases.

  1. Ms. Fabry,

I am sorry for your suffering and that of your family and for the lack of general awareness to the legitimate health affects of elevated mold exposure. We see evidence every single day of the damaging affects of mold growth in all types of spaces from residences to offices to schools, fire stations and every other existing type of building.

Unfortunately, we encounter a serious lack of understanding as well from many who simply have not been exposed to the issue or choose to ignore or minimize the associated risks. We work every day to help educate those with whom we come into contact and are regular participants and sponsors at events, seminars and industry expos - all aimed at improving the understanding of, response to and solutions for microbial problems. Global Prevention is a nationwide provider of exceptional remediation and prevention services and was proud to be the FIRST approved company on the Mold-Help website after a very thorough review and examination by Ms. Roberts, her staff and 3rd party experts she engaged to judge our approach and results. GPS locations from Los Angeles to Miami consistently educate our clients, solve their problems and completely satisfy their needs beyond their expectations. I wish you well and hope you do not have another encounter with a serious mold situation.

    Best regards,

how do we know if they are?

  4. I'm currently working on a research proposal right now, and I need to know what kind of fungi can be cultured to be used for my experiment.
I hope I'm not bothering you or anything, but I'll really appreciate it if you help.
    Thanks!

  5. In regards to the plant question and the experiment question I would suggest the website
    http://www.doctorfungus.org/
There is an entire section devoted to plant pathology.
I imagine there are a multitude of fungi that you can use for your experiment. I hope you find help as well at this site.

  6. Ms. Fabry,

Are you familiar with Dr. A.V. Costantini's book series, FungalBionics.

In FungalBionics Dr. Costantini and his colleagues describe how the exposure to fungus/mold and mycotoxins via our diet either directly causes or contributes to the development of many health problems such as cancer, heart disease autoimmune conditions etc..

  7. Yes, I am familiar with Dr. Constanini! I saw a fascinating interview with him on Doug Kaufmann's "Know the Cause" website.
    Thanks for mentioning it!

  8. Dear Ms. Fabry,
My daughter has been sick for over three weeks with similar symptoms, I watched your broadcast last night with your family and husband. I have been perplexed they have been telling my daughter she is not sick and she may need to see a psych doctor. She is depressed. I am exhausted. I made an appointment with a infectious control specialist. Mono or exposure to mold. I need help, I am wondering how can we get checked out? Who can I call in my area beside Dr. Michael Gray and who can I find to test my home. I love my children and I do not want them in a home causing them permanent illness. Help. Thanks

  10. hi there, i moved to our beautiful new home last may - 1850;s converted schoolhouse with apple and pear trees, and from day 1 i seemed to be always poorly. i began having allergies which i had not had before and often was wheezy and struggling to breathe. i sepnt many housrs inthe doctors surgery and in october took myself into ER struggling to breathe. Nothing could be found. my GP diagnosed me with Tietze Syndrome, and sent me home on ibruprofen. still unwell i kept returning, another full blood count was done, when i suspected thyroid following some neck swelling and difficulties losing weight, inabilitiy to sing as i didi ( i am a performing arts teacher) in fact i stopped singing and playing the saxophone as i could not breathe.

the doc then asked me to stop and supplemnts and have another blood test this january revealing an under active thyroid and placed me on thyroxine. every day i was poorly, swollen watery red eyes until one day i could not open them and felt so ill, and had to pull over on the express way and i wanted to wait until a policeman found me, i felt so bad.
my children were waiting for me so somehow i found the energy to continue.

when i got home, i took myself to be, which i never do as my children have learning disabilities but i had no choice, i felt awful. at 9pm that night i fell aslpeep, which seemed more like i had gone uncnoscious and felt worse than ever.

at 1 am i shot awake with an enormous jerking spasm which frightened me. i felt awful. i knew i could not go on, my tongue was swelling, my face was numb,,y hands that had been tingling were now numb, i had terrible headaches and swollen eyes. i dragged myself from my bed and dressed and took myself into the local ER, which was nearby.

when i arrived, i was jerking and shaking and struggling to breathe.
i was taking to a cubicle but within the hour my tongue had swollen and i really could not breathe. the staff nurse place me on Piriton and oxygen. several hours later it subsided.

still the docs were puzzled. i was sent home with Piriton, to be taken 4-6 hourly. and to discontinue with thyroxine until i was well.

as soon a i went into the house my body began to swell and react. then i suspected my home. that night i also reacted to the Pirition and when i lay down to sleep it was as though i was going to die as my heart seemed to beat slower and slower.

to cut a long story short, i got worse until i moved myself and the children out to where we sued to live at my friends house in another county, where we are obviously recovering.

the consultant recalled me in the week and i told him everything. he did not agree nor diagree but listened intently and then agreed i should leave the house and he would support me in finding alternative accomodation and to not return to the house..

however, he did not say if he thought it was mould toxins.
under my house is a cellar, which i was told afer i moved in flooded from time to time but that the landlord had stopped draining it. we also had a really bad snowy winter.

i believe in that cellar are mould spores giving off toxic gases and wondered if you had any further insighht. a fireman friend told me had it been carbononoxide poisoning it would have shown on my blood test..

  11. Sally,
You are right to suspect mold as playing a big part in this. Trust your instincts. I do have some thoughts regarding testing. If you want to email me at andrea@chrisfabry.com I can make some suggestions for you.

  12. Hi Andrea!

I've been reading your family's story of mold exposure, and from someone who has been in your same shoes- I so am very sorry for your struggles!! I'm still battling my issues with this terrible condition as well, but I've become A LOT better through the right treatments (predominately IVC) and prayer.

I was wondering if you've ever heard of intravenous IVC therapy (mega doses of vitamin C that kills fungus and helps the body to repair). Here's a link for you to look at the treatment more in depth: http://floridadetox.com/programs-2/brain-wellness-program
I don't know if it's an option you've considered, but I figured I would pass the info along your way since it's helped me so much. The treatment doesn't just mask the symptoms, but rather, excretes the mold from the body. I would love to hear your thoughts on the treatment, and I'm hoping it can be of some help. I would love to see your family become COMPLETELY well--that's my prayer for each of you.:)

I was also curious about your genotypes. I know in the TBN video, I heard you say you have the double allele. Are each of your children heterozygous as well, or do some just have the single strand?

I'm rooting for the health of your family and praying for a complete healing!!<3

    God's Blessings,

    Sarah

  14. Thank you so much for putting your story out there for me to find. My Naturopath told me one day after seeing me and my two small children for 5 months that she felt we lived in a toxic home. I went home and tried to figure out what that meant. I started with a mildewy smelling HE washing machine. From there, found the symptoms of mold exposure (which we had many of)....and then came upon your story. After reading it, I decided then and there that we had to have a mold inspection company look at our house. They came and we got the results about 2 weeks after I first saw your site. The mold was only found in the air samples. There was no visible mold, but the spore counts were 40,000 spores per square meter in 2 areas we tested and 27,000 in the 3rd. We've had it professionally remediated and are now getting ready to put our house on the market. I'm looking forward to a healthier future for all of us. Thanks again. Your information has forever changed the course of our lives.

    Best Wishes,
    LeAnne Ludwig and Family
