Introducing momsAWARE

I spoke with a mom last week who called from a hotel, one day after her family had vacated their toxic home. Since moving into the home in 2005, her health has declined. In her words: “I made a steady slide into poor health, including interstitial cystitis, fibromyalgia, tremors, metallic taste, electronic shock pain in body, swollen joints, tingling in scalp, severe and chronic costochondritis, autoimmune problems, thyroid problems.” She tried everything to regain her health, including nutritional strategies such as juicing and avoidance of all sugar and processed foods.

Nothing helped. Her children became ill. Her husband became ill. Her dog died. Six months ago her parents moved in and they too became ill.

“I never once suspected mold,” she says.

Extensive research led her to the discovery that toxic mold can cause these various symptoms. Last week when she discovered six jackets covered in yellow, green, purple, and black furry mold, she and her family vacated their home.

“I’m worried about finances. I’m worried about whether we will recover. I’m worried about the legal implications of walking away from our home. How on earth we are going to pay for all that is coming our way, I just do not know.”

This mother’s story is all too common. It's our family's story, and so many others. This week marks three years since we found ourselves in a hotel, asking these same questions. Over the course of these last three years, I have spoken with dozens of families who have experienced this devastation.

For this reason I have a passion to raise awareness not only about toxic mold, but also about the hazards of pesticides, chemicals, EMFs, personal care products, and more. It is my dream to provide financial assistance to families just like this one.

So it is with great excitement that I introduce momsAWARE, an organization dedicated to seeing this dream become a reality. We are currently completing the incorporation process and will then apply for 501(c)(3) non-profit status with the IRS, which will allow us to accept tax-deductible donations as a qualified charitable organization.

We have an active website which includes articles, podcasts, videos, recipes, and helpful links. We’d love to have you join our Forum and visit us on Facebook for our daily educational tips and links to helpful resources.

Our website can be viewed here: momsAWARE.org

I am also very excited to let you know about our very own All-Natural Lip Balm! My daughter Megan and I have developed this recipe, which includes nourishing Jojoba Oil, luxurious Apricot Kernel Oil, sweet Lemon Oil, and the rare Melissa Oil. This lip balm has done wonders for our family! We plan to add seasonal versions with ingredients such as white fir for winter, lavender for spring, citrus for summer, and cinnamon for fall. I invite you to try our momsAWARE All-Natural Lip Balm by visiting our Online Store.

The world is slowly awakening to the connection between toxicity and health. Join us as we seek to encourage and empower, one searching family at a time.

On a side note, we are enjoying our motel, not the price, but the fact that we have beds, chairs, and somewhere to go!

  2. This is so interesting. I have a friend facing a myriad of health problems and am suspicious that her problem may be similar to what your family experienced. It is great to have a site that I can refer her to. Keep up the great work.

  3. Andrea,
My heart aches for this family's loss and the tremendous obstacles they are facing... that so many of us have faced. I hope you see what a God-send you are to these who are struggling, who have had the "rug" pulled out from under them, literally. And now, three years later, to see the beginnings of a dream to take form in your own life. Perhaps it is a new dream, never considered before you own "turn in the road", but a noble pursuit to help and inform others. Thanks for not giving up, for pressing on to find answers, healing and hope!
    A grateful reader, kt

  4. Andrea-

I am so happy to see this annoucement!

You will never know what the sound of your voice on the other end of the phone the day we spoke was like. It was like being tossed a lifeline in the darkest of storms. You offered us hope, validation and a safe place to briefly rest my weary mind, because I didnt have to explain to you. You got it - you know firsthand how devastating this is.

What a gift you gave us. You will just never know. Your words stay with me still. Daily.

I know we will recover. Somehow we will find a way to thrive in our new normal.

My husband and I have had many conversations where we've talked about the wish to someday create a safe "haven" in the world where families can go to heal a bit, rather than staying in hotels that have many of the same problems they are fleeing from. A place safe from all environmental toxins that will allow you to just get your bearings and figure out a safe place to land where you can learn about nutrient based diets and other healing modalities.

That place might not exist in the physical world right now, but Im so thankful that it does exist here - on Moms Aware - in the virtual world.

Thank you doesnt seem to cover it.

    Kim

  5. A friend and I were talking tonight around a campfire about our growing awareness of widespread toxicity and the growing trend of allergies, new-found illnesses, and even cancer. While we have not experienced the devastating health issues your family is currently facing, we are cognizant of the need to ween ourselves from dependance on convenient or sweet smelling toxic commercial products. I'm happy to have found your blog and new website and look forward to referencing it frequently on how to become more health conscious. Thank you for your willingness to share your story and knowledge with the world. Jesus has made you a beacon of light for those out there that feel like there is no one to turn to for support or understanding. My family and I will be praying for you. - SS
